The history of our association is impressive!

In 1973, based on a collective vision for a museum of modern and contemporary art in Geneva, Amam was created. After twenty years of concerted effort by its members, the association succeeded in convincing the city authorities to provide a suitable building, and, thanks to seven private donors, the necessary funds were raised.

Christian Bernard, chosen for his unique concept for this museum, became its founding director and consitituted a small and competent team.

Launched in 1994, Mamco, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, has become a pivotal force in Geneva’s cultural landscape and a pioneer in the international contemporary art scene. The City and Canton of Geneva have added their support while the foundation, regrouping the private sector, has expanded steadily. Renewing almost entirely its exhibitions three times a year, Mamco is the youngest, the largest and the most contemporary museum in its category in Switzerland.

Once the museum came into existence, Amam became Amamco, the not-for-profit Association of Friends of Mamco. Foremost among its goals are the support of the museum and its objectives including the development of an acquisitions fund for the enrichment of the museum’s permanent collection. The association offers courses in contemporary art, guided visits of the exhibitions, encounters with artists and collectors as well as cultural excursions and activities.

Goals of amamco

  • Support the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Geneva (Mamco)
  • participate in the financing of Mamco
  • develop an acquisition fund for the permanent collection of Mamco
  • contribute to the local, national and international reputation of Mamco
  • contribute to the dialogue between Mamco and the public authorities
  • develop a priviledged relationship between the memebers of the association and Mamco
